Designed for the vacation home market, blue sky mod offers a variety of house plans which are pre-fabricated. the range of house plans allows the consumer to pick the right size for them. all the homes share a similar modernist aesthetic, with simple lines and lots of wood. the homes are all designed by architect todd saunders to have the smallest impact on the environment by using local recycled materials and manufacturing.

This is a unique house which integrates the latest in building technologies making it specifically designed for northern climates(-50C).  It combines such things as solar energy, automation and natural light making it an energy efficient house. The ceiling tiling system is also quite innovative and provides an artistic touch to this unique house.  This type of experimental home is very much in line with work being conducted at the National Research Council and would warrant possible collaboration in the future.”North House is a new and innovative green housing model that produces more energy than it consumes and makes sustainable living attractive and rewarding.

Home for Life is designed as the world’s first Active House and is a result of a research and design development aimed at ensuring a necessary foothold in architecture in an anticipated sustainable and low-carbon future.

Thanks to 7 sq.m. solar collectors, 50 sq.m. solar cells and a solar heat pump the house has an anticipated energy surplus of 9kWh/sq.m./year it. In this way it takes approximately 40 years for the house to generate the same amount of energy that was used to produce its building materials and at that point the house will have returned more to nature than it consumed.

The window area of the house is 40 percent of the total floor area – twice the area of a traditional house – while sensors register heat, humidity and CO2 in all rooms and automatic window opening mechanisms let in fresh air. Furthermore the occupants and environment of the house are valued through quantitative and qualitative interviews and measuring. Subsequent the values are analyzed to develop knowledge to optimize the positive impact on the occupants and climate.

1. Areca Palm (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens)
  • Works well in the day time
  • Great for living areas
  • One needs about 4 shoulder high plants/person
  • Needs to be put outdoors once every 3-4 months
  • The leaves of the plant need to be wiped everyday in Delhi and perhaps once a month in a cleaner city
  • The soil used should be of vermi manure or use hydroponics
2. Mother-in-law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata)
  • Converts CO2 into O2 at night
  • One requires about 6-8 such waist high plants per person in the bedroom
  • Leaves need to be wiped in the same way as the Areca Palm
  • The soil used should be of vermi manure or use hydroponics
3. Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum)
  • Excellent for removing Formaldehyde and other VOC’s
  • Best grown using hydroponics

By “growing” fresh air indoors we can reduce the supply of external fresh air needed by air-conditioned buildings, while still meeting industry standards (ASHRAE) for healthy indoor air.By reducing the supply of external fresh air, we achieve significant reduction in energy needed for heating and cooling buildings.
